TITLE: IWO JIMA FIRST FLAG RAISING
Oil on canvas 24" x 30"
Oil on canvas 24" x 30"
SALUTE TO THE HEROS WHO MADE IT THERE FIRST There are 10 military personnel in my painting, from left to right who they all could be: Far left –Chick Robeson. Henry “Hank” Hansen wearing a soft cap, left hand on pole, died in action 7 days later. Radio man - Raymond Jacobs. Behind Jacobs’ legs there is another Harold Schrier. Sitting down Thomas Ernest “Boots”. There are 3 right hands on the pole one of which is John Bradley. Charlo Louis and Marshall Gene were also present. James Michels is in the front right with the M1 paratrooper carbine. Charles Lindberg is standing behind him – far right.
The famous picture (left one in B+W photo)) taken by Joe Rosenthal was actually the 2nd flag raising on February 23rd, 1945 on Iwo Jima. Not many people are aware that there was a 1st flag raising at around 10:20am earlier that day atop Mount Suribachi photographed by Louis Lowery (right). The first flag was exchanged for a larger one so that it would be more visible. I like both photographs.
